Catching up on Editing Local Shoots

A FEW TRIP GALLERIES ONLINE NOW

I got a bit behind on my editing of local trips, so this weekend I forced myself to sit down and get through four or five new trips of photos. Take a look around to see what there has been to photograph around the Billings area over the past month or so.

I'll try not to get this far behind again; but lord only knows.

Hunting the Billings Area, November 18th

PHOTOS ONLINE NOW

I had the opportunity to tag along when some friends went hunting on November 18th. Being raised hunting I have spent thousands of hours in the field and it was nice to be out with good hunters producing quality images. Thanks to Todd, Rick, George, and Gunnr for letting me tag along. I fully expect to go out more in the future and produce more images of hunters afield. Time in the field with friends is a great thing, and when you can make nice images too it is all that much better.

Billings Area, November 14th

PHOTOS ONLINE NOW

I have 5 unedited local trips sitting on my computer, so what do I do? I go out to take a few more photographs. To be honest work took me to Riverfront Park where interesting light and lots of gulls made me want to play a bit, really just practice for Bosque del Apache. ;)

I may have gotten a little creative for some of you, if you don't like the abstract blurs just appreciate the tack sharp bird in flight shots that I open the gallery with.

Color Space

I live and die by accurate colors, and that is why I am a firm believer in knowing your color profile and keeping all pieces of the process in check.

I have long preached shooting and working in, at least, AdobeRGB and this article goes a long way in explaining why I am so adamant about color accuracy. Your camera, monitor, software, and printer all need to be able to show colors as you what them to. Without calibration in a thought through color profile you simply will not know what people will see. I need the blue sky to be the same blue when I shoot, edit, print, and share to the web.

Ansel Adams, The Father of Color?

In a recent Smithsonian article on Ansel Adams' color photography work, one can not help to wonder what else Adams may deserve to be known for.

Those of us in the world of landscape photography know him as the father of landscape photography, master of the darkroom, and maestro of the monochrome; but many forget that he was a talented portrait photographer and also a very sought after color photographer.

Well worth the read.

DPR posts full 7D Review

I don't know why it is not all over the web yet; but DPR has posted their full review of the 7D.

I have been sharing my thoughts on the camera and it is nice to see some real tests that align with my thoughts.

It is simple.. the 7D is the best APS-C camera to date :)

Yellowstone Oct. 31st & Nov. 1st

PHOTOS ONLINE NOW

Just a quick trip down to the park. I had hopes that I may get one last chance to photograph Great Grey Owls; but they did not cooperate. Lots of Coyotes out on the move, tons of birds around in the park, and Bison/Elk filling the valleys.

Saturday was full of snow, down south, while Sunday was blue skies all around.

It is a tradition of mine to do all I can to visit the last weekend of the "open park" so I am glad I was able to do it again.

With a busy two months ahead I do not know how many more days I'll get to spend in the park this year.

Enjoy the images, feel free to ask questions and leave comments on my site. As always give your favorites a thumbs up.

I will edit these images again when Lightroom has support for the 7D, the noise reduction and color depth are not quite perfect in the Beta support. I also have a handful of landscape images that should be added in the next few days.

Thanks for looking and enjoy.

Yellowstone Bio Blitz, count to 1200

As many of you may remember I was privlaged to be apart of Yellowstone National Park's first Bio Blitz.

The photos are online here.

I thought I would share the latest article to run in the Billings Gazette, which is the major paper that serves all of this area.

The count is now up to 1200 species with several new species to Yellowstone being documented for the very first time.
