9TB's

Well I think I am to the point where I need better/bigger storage solutions.

That is a screen shot of my desktop with most all of my hard drives connected.

I love fire wire and could not do my job without its speed and ability to daisy chain. I also love that my 17" Macbook Pro has both 400 and 800 fire wire.

Drobo may be my next solution.

On the go posting...

Hey all

I am just trying out posting from my handheld.

I hope you have been over to www.Rocky.edu and checked out our Bears. They are now on to the Final Four (NAIA).

Billings Area, March 18th

IMAGES ONLINE

More Billings area birding; however I ended up with more mammal photos than avian photos

This was both ends of the day. I started an hour and a half before sun up to go out and watch a Greater Sage Grouse lek (no activity). A few birds in the area, a few hairs out enjoying sunrise near the Prairie Dog town. I left there and headed to an area that is know for Owl activity (heard but no visual spots). I did come across a group of what I believe were hybrid does feeding on the other side of some shrubs, I could not go through/over/under so I shot through, I think it made for something interesting (I love 2.8).

In the evening I headed out to some clifs to check on the birds of prey. Some luck, not really with photos; but a treat to see them at work. I did play around with the 300 and TC's with a Hair and Pigeon.

Billings Area, March 16th

IMAGES ONLINE

I swear I am not a birder; but I went out again tonight.

With the incoming weather things were a bit different.
And gave me lots of reason to head out to shoot.

Saw some Horned Larks again.
Saw two Rough-Legged Hawks, one normal one Dark Morph.
Then the usual Canadian Goose, Mallard, Domestic Mallard, a pair of American Wigeon, a Graylag Goose, and from what I could see a few Greater Sage-Grouse hens.

A cloudy (just enough) afternoon gave me perfect reason to drive both ends of town checking on my favorite birding spots to see how this year looks to be coming along.

And the raptors proved to be out in force.

Now I am not really much of a birder so my ID skills are poorer than I would like, and when I am out I really only hope to capture a few images, that are ok'ish/usable.

Later this week it is time to head out to the Sage Grouse lek.

I need your help...

As many of you know my portfolio is getting a bit outdated. Yes it still represents what I am doing; but it could be filled with better, more recent, images. This is where all of you come in. ShumwayPhotography.com is full of galleries (wildlife, landscape, birds) I need you to go onto it and leave comments and ratings on your favorite images. Over the next month I will be closely monitoring my site so I can take your input mix it with others and some of my own. This is how I am going to fill out my new flash portfolio site.

Thanks in advance for taking time to go through my images and remind me of your favorites.

Look for a new online portfolio by early summer. Then keep an eye out for some very cool things to come.

Yellowstone, February 28th - March 2nd

TRIP NOW ONLINE
The sun ruined much of the three days of shooting it did let up enough for me to make some images to share. And they are now online.

My daily reports sum it all up. It was warm and sunny so I did a lot of hiking/snowshoeing. I had my luck turn on me the last morning and got to spend a few minutes with two wolves from the 472 group.

As always please take a few moments to look through all of the photos, leaving comments and giving a thumbs up to your favorites.

I had a great time in the park, and I hope you enjoy viewing the fruits of my labor.

Yellowstone, March 1st & 2nd...

Well I camped Sunday night so these two days got put together.

Sunday started the day in Gardiner at 26° and I saw 9° - 51°, with lots of sun it was another day to hike.

Monday started the day off in Mammoth a 34° and ranged from 14° - 57° (63° in Gardiner.) The day started partly cloudy providing a pleasant sun rise, about time, and had nice light all the way through my best, be it ever brief, encounter of the trip. Then the sun killed the clouds and it was time for a hike then lunch and then an afternoon nap. I awoke to clouds forming and was quite excited for my possibilities for the remainder of the day. I had usable light to shoot some coyotes and elk, unfortunately the sun and 50° in the morning gave the snow a less than ideal look so Bison were out of the question.

The two day list: (most all were seen both days)

Golden Eye
Bald Eagle
Grey Jay
Mallard
American Dipper
Red Tail Hawk
(lots of other small 'no ID' birds)(4 or 5 different species)
Magpie
Raven
Wolf
Coyote
Elk
Bison
Mule Deer
Pronghorn Antelope
Bighorn Sheep
Snowshoe Hare (still no photo opportunities with them)

All in all the trip was slow due to the poor light. It did give me a chance to do 6 good hikes in three days and I did get one shooting opportunity that could provided some quality images, I'll have to wait to get them developed before I know for sure.

I checked on the Otters at least a dozen times and no fresh signs :(
I also put in a few miles up and down stream to check for sign (twice.)
The only sign (from before Thursday) was just under the bridge and there was nothing new near the confluence (either one :)

Thanks for reading, I think I may be able to make one more short March trip, if things pick up.
